My Story of Grief
I had my life mapped out, knowing the trajectory for which I was headed. That all changed January 4, 2021, at 2:54 A.M. I received the life-changing phone call from my mother, that my father unexpectedly died of a heart attack (as a result of a “simple, non-invasive procedure,” gone wrong). From that day forward, I adopted the protector and provider mindset, wanting to assume the role my father once owned. As time progressed and I began navigating my grief journey, I realized that my grief did not have a time limit, and I couldn’t be everything to everyone, without first showing up for myself.
In honoring my feelings and my father, I authored my first children’s book; The Gifts We Leave Behind. Through a myriad of feelings highlighted in the book, I intentionally honor my father’s legacy, embracing the gifts he left.
Believer of the Triune God. Daughter. Wife. Mother. Friend. Author. Grief Advocate. Educator. I confidently lean on Psalm 34:18, which is God’s promise to remain close to the brokenhearted, saving those who are crushed in spirit. He understands our feelings and helps us bear the burden of sorrow, restoring us to wholeness.
Losing a parent can be life altering and one of the hardest experiences we have to face in life. As a bereaved daughter who’d lost my father, my hero, the man who had never broken my heart, I didn’t know how I’d continue on in life, being present for myself and my family. On my journey, God reminded me that He is the God of all sufficient grace, He is my strength when I am weak, and He wipes all of my tears.
